Be Active in Your Community... Become a Part of Your Neighborhood Network... Live Better at Home

Avenidas Village is a membership program offered through the non-profit agency Avenidas. It’s a community network for older adults that offers practical help, resources and social connections to keep you active, confident and independent in your own home and neighborhood.

More and more people plan to stay in their homes as long as possible after retirement...

Avenidas Village was designed to make this easier for you!

Learn about "The Village Concept" as an option for aging-in-place in your home!

Where do you want to be in the years after you retire?

According to recent AARP surveys, 90% of adults over 65 prefer to remain in their current home as long as possible. Surrounded by neighbors and the community you know, you can stay in control of your daily schedule and choices. You can save money compared to making the move to a long term residential community, and you may even be able to keep your home to pass along to your children.

However, over time, there are new challenges to face. Your adult children may have moved across the state--or the country. It may become more difficult to maintain your home on your own. You or your spouse may need some extra help or care due to health issues. Maybe you've lost a spouse or some of the important people in your social network. Situations like these are often the catalyst for people to start to question whether "aging in place" is really an option.

About Avenidas Village

Avenidas Village is unique in that it is member driven, but sponsored by Avenidas of Palo Alto, the premier local source for programs and support for older adults since 1969. When a group of Palo Alto residents began to explore the idea of establishing a Village over 14 years ago, partnering with Avenidas was the perfect fit. While the activities and offerings of the Village are developed by and for the members, Avenidas helps the Village to achieve its objectives by providing office space, staff and logistical support, and cooperative programming - ensuring a rich range of offerings for lifelong learning, wellness, and social services, all available at a discount to Avenidas Village members.

How can joining Avenidas Village help me remain at home?

As a Village member, you will become part of a regional and neighborhood network of like-minded neighbors whom you can get to know through organized social events such as lunch groups, community outings and tours, special interest groups, and neighborhood gatherings. You will have the opportunity to connect with other Villagers as a volunteer, whether the need is driving someone to an appointment or shopping, making a social call by phone or in person, or helping someone out with organizing files or other small household chores. Or if you need help in one of these ways, other Villagers are available to lend you a hand.

Additionally, Avenidas Village maintains an extensive list of pre-screened vendors you can call on to provide services as needed, such as an appliance or home repairs, home health care, gardening, computer/technology help and much more. These vendors have been carefully screened to ensure quality service combined with a special understanding of the needs of senior customers. Most of the vendors provide discounts for Village members to save you money, too.

Avenidas Village also offers special member benefits including an annual free handyman visit, annual free tech support session (in-home or remote), and free and discounted transportation when you need it. Plus, Village office staff can work with you to find the help you need from a vendor, volunteer, or provide information on community resources. You have peace of mind, knowing there is just one number to call to help you navigate a difficult situation or coordinate the services you need, when you need them.

You will enjoy additional free benefits as well, such as a home safety check, an initial needs assessment, scheduled friendly phone calls, and specially organized events, lectures, and social opportunities to keep you active, supported, and connected at home and in your community - to request any of these, and more, all you need to do is call.

The Village Movement

In the early 2000s, a group of neighbors in Beacon Hill, Massachusetts, launched the Village Movement as a new solution to support "aging in place." They developed a network between neighbors to enhance their independence and security at home. Rather than uprooting to move into a "senior" residence, members could continue living in their beloved community knowing that they could access help, resources, and social connections as needed through membership in their "Village".

This movement spread quickly and today there are nearly 300 Villages supporting vibrant, active seniors throughout the United States. Avenidas Village, the first in California, was launched in 2007 by a group of neighbors inspired by Beacon Hill Village. We are active members in the national Village to Village Network and in Village Movement California, sharing "aging in place" resources and strategies with over 60 active and developing Villages throughout California.
